Extensive track work and station renovations will severely disrupt Helsinki’s commuter rail network starting Monday, forcing tens of thousands of passengers onto replacement bus services or alternate routes, public broadcaster Yle reports.

From June 1, train services between Huopalahti and Myyrmäki will halt entirely as Malminkartano, Kannelmäki, and Pohjois-Haaga stations undergo major repairs. The I, P, and K lines will also face reduced service, with some stations—including Puistola and Tapanila—closed for renovations. A-line trains will suspend operations for the summer, leaving Valimo, Pitäjänmäki, and Mäkkylä stations without service.

The changes will impact a significant share of commuters: in April alone, Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL) recorded 5.5 million boardings on its commuter rail network.

Additional closures will follow later in June. From June 22 to July 26, all train traffic west of Leppävaara—including stations in Kauklahti, Kirkkonummi, and Siuntio—will cease due to the Espoo City Rail project, which aims to improve capacity and reliability. Tuomarila station will remain closed until October 4.

Replacement bus services have been expanded, particularly between Pasila and Myyrmäki and west of Leppävaara. HSL warns that many journeys will take longer, and some may require transfers.

Further weekend disruptions are planned for September and October, with additional closures on the coastal rail line affecting E, U, L, and Y services. During the five-week summer shutdown on that route, limited X-line trains will operate between Leppävaara and Helsinki, stopping at Pasila, Ilmala, and Huopalahti.
