More than 800,000 Swedes now hold private health insurance policies that grant faster medical care, bypassing the country’s public healthcare queues, according to an investigation by public broadcaster SVT.
The practice has sparked debate over equity in the system, with critics calling it an unfair privilege where medical need no longer determines priority. Supporters argue it compensates for public sector shortcomings, allowing patients to recover sooner.
SVT’s report features cases where insured patients received treatment far ahead of uninsured counterparts facing lengthy waits in the same public system.
The 14-minute documentary, Pay Your Way Past the Queue, was published Sunday on SVT Play and remains available globally until May 31, 2028.
