South constituency records 40-60 split in first results

Initial results from Iceland’s South constituency show 40.2 per cent voting yes and 59.8 per cent voting no, mbl.is reported.

A total of 9,750 ballots had been counted. Of these, 3,901 were yes votes, 5,806 were no votes and 43 were blank.

The constituency has 42,152 registered voters. Turnout was nearly 60 per cent at 8pm.

The latest Gallup poll reported that 37 per cent of people outside the capital region intended to vote yes, while 63 per cent intended to vote no. In the capital area, 55 per cent said they planned to vote yes and 45 per cent no.
