The sold-out Seniorfestival in Esbjerg has introduced an unusual age restriction: attendees under 45 must be accompanied by an adult, festival director Poul Juhl Rasmussen told Danish broadcaster DR on Friday.

“Children under 45 need to be with a responsible grown-up,” Rasmussen said with a smile, calling the rule a playful nod to the event’s older audience. The two-day festival, now in its second year, offers seated accommodations, space for walkers and wheelchairs, and wraps up by 8 pm—features tailored to its senior crowd.

Tickets sold out quickly without advertising, Rasmussen noted, proving strong demand for events catering to older adults. “We just posted it on our websites. No marketing, no ads. We could have sold many more.”

Among the 300 attendees was Ernst Andersen, who praised the festival as a revival of communal celebration. “The people’s party is back,” he said.

Even the event’s 47-year-old host, Jacob Krogsøe, admitted he wanted to join the crowd. “My only problem is I’d rather be down there with them,” he said. “Seeing that joy in the sunshine—it’s life-affirming.”

The festival is a collaboration between Esbjerg’s elderly advocacy group Ældresagen, the Sædding community center, and the local culture and leisure house.
