Norwegian parliament member calls for action on medication access amid shortages

Erlend Svardal Bøe, a member of the Norwegian parliament from the Conservative Party, is urging the government to take action to ensure adequate access to necessary medications for the public. A recent survey by the Norwegian Pharmacy Association indicates that nearly 550,000 Norwegians are struggling to obtain the medications they need.

Bøe suggests the establishment of larger emergency stockpiles of drugs, quicker approval processes for new medications, and a new comprehensive pharmaceutical policy report. However, Deputy Minister Ellen Rønning-Arnesen contends that the government has already implemented several measures to address the ongoing medication shortages and has no plans for a new policy report.

In response to a concerning situation highlighted in the media involving local politician Inger Brokka de Ruiter from Arendal, who faces difficulties securing medication for her sick family members, Bøe emphasized the seriousness of the issue. “In Norway, individuals should not have to anxiously search for life-sustaining medications,” he remarked.

The government recently imposed rationing on certain medications, including ADHD treatments, weight-loss drugs, and antibiotics for children, in an effort to manage the current shortages. Despite these measures, Bøe argues that more must be done, advocating for increased stockpiles and quicker approvals for new treatments.

Rønning-Arnesen acknowledged that the global medication shortage is a significant problem affecting many countries, including Norway, but disagreed with claims that the government is not doing enough. She outlined several initiatives undertaken by the government, including the continuation of emergency stockpiles established during the pandemic and reforms aimed at improving the drug approval process.

Bøe acknowledged the issue’s complexity but reiterated the need for focused government intervention to ensure that Norwegians have access to the necessary medications.
