The municipality of Tórshavn has called on residents to reduce water consumption as demand rises alongside the city’s growing population, public broadcaster KVF reports.

Average daily water use per person in the Faroe Islands stands at 310 litres—nearly three times Denmark’s 110 litres per capita, according to Fríður Pálsson Dalsgarð, technical director for Tórshavn Municipality. He warned that ongoing housing development in the capital will push consumption up by around 20 percent in the near term.

To meet demand, the municipality plans to expand water supply infrastructure in the Villingardalur area, Dalsgarð said.
