Iceland considers enabling Heilsuvernd doctors from Kópavogur to provide services in Akureyri
Health authorities in Iceland are considering enabling family doctors from Heilsuvernd in Kópavogur to provide local services in Akureyri. Until a decision is made, these patients will have home visits from their doctors.
A new visiting vehicle for Heilsuvernd is set to be deployed in August, allowing doctors from Kópavogur to assist patients in Akureyri directly at their homes. Earlier this year, health insurance providers prohibited these doctors from offering services from Læknastofur Akureyrar, a specialized medical center located in Glerártorg. Since that restriction, residents of northern Iceland could only receive care through phone or online consultations.
Heilsuvernd has announced via their Facebook page that they are actively working on improving service delivery for registered patients in Akureyri. The management of health insurance is eager to enhance remote services, and a local implementation of Heilsuvernd’s services in Akureyri is being considered as part of that strategy.
The current limitation to remote consultations has raised concerns among the affected patients, who have expressed the need for in-person medical care. As the situation evolves, further discussions are expected regarding the possible resumption of local services by Heilsuvernd in Akureyri, although specifics are yet to be finalized.
