Randers Rainforest to expand with three new domes
Randers Rainforest, a major Danish tourist attraction featuring tropical wildlife, will add three new domes to its existing site after the city council approved expansion plans on Tuesday, Danish broadcaster DR reports.
The 4,900-square-metre expansion will nearly double the indoor exhibition space, adding to the current 6,500 square metres across three climate-controlled domes—each themed after Africa, Asia, and South America. Two of the new domes will house additional exhibits, while the third will serve as a new entrance and café area.
Director Henrik Herold said the project could draw 100,000 more visitors annually, raising attendance from around 300,000 to 450,000 in its first years. “This is huge for us,” he told DR. “There’s still much to clarify, but now we can move forward.”
The expansion will occupy part of a municipal parking lot currently used by visitors, commuters, and shoppers. However, city officials stressed that alternative parking—including a planned nearby garage—will offset the loss of 200 spaces. “We won’t reduce overall parking capacity,” said Henrik Hove, chair of the business and planning committee.
Construction timelines remain uncertain, but Herold aims to open portions of the expansion within four years if plans proceed as scheduled. Further discussions on green spaces and traffic management are ongoing between the attraction and Randers Municipality.
