A major exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s late works at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg has shattered attendance records, with 4,377 visitors in its first week—more than double the 1,822 who visited during the same period last year, museum director Lasse Andersson told DR.

The show, Late Picasso, is the largest of its kind in the Nordic region in 40 years. “It’s a name everyone knows, and it’s a special period in his career,” Andersson said. The first week marked the museum’s highest attendance ever.

Meanwhile, a separate exhibition in Vrå has also seen a surge in visitors. We Love Poul Anker Bech, featuring 60 rarely seen paintings by the late North Jutland artist, drew 614 visitors in its opening week—eight times the number from the same week last year. Many of the works, privately owned and previously unseen by the public, were loaned to the Kunstbygningen museum for the show.

“These are paintings the public may never have seen before, so there’s great curiosity,” said museum director Signe Højmark.
