Hiker rescued in Kerlingarfjöll region of Iceland after two-hour search

Sunday 28th July 2024 on 21:48 in Iceland Iceland

A hiker who encountered difficulties today in the Kerlingarfjöll region has been successfully transported to safety. Rescuers were able to locate the individual, although initial attempts based on the person’s cellphone signal were imprecise, leading to a search that took approximately two hours.

The hiker was picked up by a rescue vehicle, which met with a helicopter from the Coast Guard at Ásgarður in Kerlingarfjöll, where the helicopter crew ensured the man was taken to a hospital. According to officials, around fifty responders participated in the rescue efforts, including teams from various areas—specifically from Laugarvatn, Biskupstungum, and Grímsnes—as well as additional rescue units from Árborg, Hellu, and other locations in Southern Iceland.

Conditions in the area complicated the operation, as poor visibility made it challenging to bring the hiker aboard the Coast Guard helicopter. The coordinated efforts of the rescue teams were crucial in the successful outcome of the operation.
