Keflavík airport prepares for more long security queues

Keflavík Airport faced its longest queue in living memory on Thursday as travellers leaving Iceland waited to pass through security, mbl.is reports. The queue extended outside the terminal at one point, while the maximum wait reached 45 minutes.

Guðjón Helgason, an information officer at airport operator Isavia, said the queue was longer than staff had seen before. It lasted for some time but had cleared by the time he spoke to mbl.is.

Thursdays, especially mornings, are generally busy at Keflavík Airport. Many of the travellers who had arrived in Iceland in recent days and weeks to see the total solar eclipse were leaving on Thursday morning, creating additional pressure as groups arrived at the terminal at roughly the same time.

All security screening lines were staffed, with additional personnel brought in to handle the demand. Airport staff are preparing for similar conditions on Friday morning because more travellers are expected to leave. Isavia said all screening lines would again be staffed, with extra employees available to keep the process moving smoothly.
