Europe races to rearm as US military reduction looms in Europe

Europe is racing to rearm ahead of an expected reduction in the American military presence on the continent, according to an analysis by Swedish public broadcaster SVT. While countries such as Spain are calling for the European Union to foot the bill, nations in northern Europe may pursue their own path.

“Wednesday evening may have shown the first outlines of deeper Nordic defence cooperation — or even a Nordic army,” wrote SVT security reporter John Granlund in the analysis.

The piece noted that Europe is working against the clock to build up its military capabilities before the United States scales back its forces in the region.
