Summer arrives in Stockholm, Uppsala and a surprise Norrland village
Meteorological summer has officially begun in Stockholm, Enköping and Uppsala, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reports. But the seasonal shift has also reached an unexpected location: Svartbyn in Överkalix, over 900 kilometres north of the other summer zones.
Warm air is moving into Sweden ahead of the weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 20–25°C in parts of the country, particularly in the south. The heatwave has pushed the summer boundary northward, with the capital region now meeting the criteria for meteorological summer—a five-day stretch where the average daily temperature stays above 10°C.
Svartbyn’s early summer arrival stands out as an anomaly, according to SVT meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt. “It’s a bit unusual,” he said. “Warm air has found its way in there.” While summer typically spreads northward in an orderly fashion, this year’s pattern has defied expectations, with the Norrland village joining southern Sweden in the seasonal transition.
A weather map from SVT shows summer conditions (green) now covering parts of central and northern Sweden, while spring (yellow) and lingering winter (blue) persist in other areas.
