The police investigation into a fatal hit-and-run in Heinola in December 2025 has concluded, with prosecutors now reviewing charges against a man in his 30s, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

Authorities suspect the driver deliberately steered his vehicle from the road onto a sidewalk, striking a 20-year-old local man who died at the scene from his injuries. Three other men walking with the victim escaped unharmed.

The case is being treated as a potential manslaughter, three counts of attempted manslaughter, and aggravated drunk driving. The driver fled the scene but was located shortly afterward when his abandoned vehicle was found outside the city center.

The incident occurred in central Heinola around 00:20 on Independence Day. Police previously told Yle that a “negative encounter” at a local grill kiosk preceded the events but have not disclosed further details from the investigation.
