Public reports of drone sightings have become a daily task for police in southeastern Finland, with authorities encouraging residents to share observations, Yle reports.

The Southeast Finland Police Department now handles drone-related incidents almost daily, though not all reports forwarded by emergency services require police action. According to Chief Inspector Jukka Lankinen, officers assess each case to determine whether the drone is civilian or military in nature.

“Some reports lead to on-site investigations, others do not,” Lankinen said. He noted that while many sightings turn out to be aircraft or legally operated drones, suspicions of military drones trigger larger operations, including area lockdowns and bomb squad deployments.

Civilian drones often have visible flashing lights, whereas military drones typically lack them—though Lankinen acknowledged exceptions. Emergency services director Taito Vainio added that some reports are resolved during the initial call, as many sightings involve licensed drone flights or misidentified objects like airplanes.

Vainio described the overall volume of drone reports as low compared to the 7,000 daily emergency calls handled nationwide. Spikes in reports have occurred during public alerts, such as a recent warning in the Uusimaa region.

Police stress that public tips remain valuable, even if not every sighting warrants intervention. Authorities evaluate the credibility of reports and their potential risk before deciding on further action.
