Five drivers caught under the influence in Vestmanna over the weekend
Five motorists have been caught driving while impaired in Vestmanna since Saturday, Faroese police report. Authorities urge drivers to check their blood alcohol levels before getting behind the wheel, especially after weekend festivities.
According to a duty officer at the police station in Tórshavn, four drivers were stopped for intoxicated driving on Saturday, with a fifth apprehended on Sunday. “It’s concerning how many people still believe they’re fit to drive the morning after drinking,” the officer told Kringvarp Føroya. “Alcohol stays in your system far longer than people realise.”
The arrests follow Vestmanna’s annual boat festival, where police reported relatively calm behaviour among attendees. “The event itself went smoothly—people were in good spirits,” the officer said. “But afterward, we saw the usual recklessness from drivers who underestimated how long alcohol affects them.”
Police have stationed two patrol vehicles in Vestmanna equipped with breathalysers, offering voluntary tests to drivers unsure of their sobriety. “If you’ve been drinking the night before, get tested,” the officer advised. “It’s better to wait than risk fines, licence suspension, or worse.”
Under Faroese law, drivers caught over the legal limit face heavy penalties, including fines and licence revocation. Authorities emphasise that even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving ability long after consumption.
