Faroese fortress walls at risk of collapse
The historic Skansin fortress in Tórshavn is in such poor condition that emergency repairs may be needed at any moment, Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
A government request for 3.5 million Danish kroner has been submitted to the Faroese parliament to address the deteriorating walls. While a September inspection by the National Heritage Agency found the structure stable, a follow-up assessment in March confirmed significant movement.
Parts of the wall have shifted outward by up to eight centimetres, with sections on the northern side sinking and bulging by 20–30 centimetres. The Faroese Road Authority warns that full restoration will be costly and take several years.
If emergency stabilisation is required, authorities say the entire fortress wall system will need to be reinforced.
