The city council of Bergen will prohibit the use and parking of rental electric scooters on Torgallmenningen and Festplassen, two of the city’s most prominent public squares, starting 18 May, Dagbladet reports.

Eivind Nævdal-Bolstad, the city’s development councillor (Conservative Party), stated that the ban aims to improve safety in central Bergen. “Both children and adults should be able to enjoy our city’s finest spaces without fear of collisions,” he said in a press release. “Electric scooters are also not the most aesthetically pleasing installations in our city. That’s why we’re removing parking options in these iconic areas.”

The restrictions include:

  • A digital no-ride zone covering Torgallmenningen and Festplassen.
  • Removal of designated parking areas near the Seafarers’ Monument and on Festplassen.

“Electric scooters have their place in our city, but we’re now protecting our most beautiful urban spaces from both traffic and parking,” Nævdal-Bolstad added.

The decision follows a 29 April city council resolution. Additionally, Bergen’s inner city centre will be closed to scooters from 11 pm on 16 May until 5 am on 18 May, coinciding with Norway’s Constitution Day celebrations.
