Police in Vaasa, western Finland, are investigating a weekend balcony shooting as an attempted murder after a 60-year-old man allegedly fired a hunting rifle at a residential building, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The incident occurred on Saturday when a single shot was fired from a balcony toward a window opening in the building. According to police, the round was live ammunition, not a blank. Several people were inside the building at the time, though no injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation led authorities to classify the case as attempted murder. A roughly 60-year-old man, detained shortly after the incident, remains the sole suspect. Police described his arrest as proceeding without confrontation.

Officers deployed multiple patrols to the scene to secure the area and identify the likely apartment from which the shot was fired. The case was initially investigated as an illegal firearms offence and endangerment before escalating to the current charge.

Investigators continue gathering evidence, including witness interviews. No further details about the suspect’s motive or connection to the building’s occupants have been released.
