A major exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s late-period works has opened at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, featuring over 60 paintings and graphic works in what is described as the largest Nordic showcase of the artist in 40 years, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

Security has been significantly tightened for the event, with museum director Lasse Andersson confirming collaboration with police and emergency services. “We have the highest level of security possible,” he said. “There are constant guards and surveillance, and we’ve worked for over a year to ensure everything is in place.” While declining to disclose specifics, Andersson described the measures as “state-of-the-art.”

The exhibition, titled Late Picasso, focuses on works from the 1960s and 1970s, a period when the artist—then in his 80s—abandoned restraint and embraced unrestrained creativity. “He had nothing left to prove,” said Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, the artist’s grandson, whose foundation loaned many of the works. “He loved to paint, and that joy is clearly visible in these pieces.”

The Kunsten Museum acquired its first Picasso painting in 1967, five years before its official opening, and has long aimed to host a major exhibition of his work. The current show runs until 6 September.
