Online extremist network pushes youth toward sadistic violence for status
A loosely organised online extremist network is driving young people to commit increasingly brutal acts of violence—including murder and coerced suicide—for social status within their circles, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reports.
Members of the so-called Com network—an international collection of groups—encourage and livestream violent attacks, arson, sexual exploitation of minors, and self-harm, according to experts. In extreme cases, participants have provoked victims into suicide attempts or carried out fatal assaults.
“The violence itself appears to be the primary motivation, rather than any traditional ideology,” said Ahn-Za Hagström, head of Sweden’s National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment (NCT).
Two high-profile 2024 attacks in Sweden—both livestreamed by 14-year-old perpetrators—highlight the trend. In separate incidents, an 82-year-old man in Stockholm and a woman walking her dog in Borås were stabbed without apparent motive. Authorities linked both assailants to the Com network, which operates under subgroups like 764 and No Lives Matter.
Exploitation and grooming
The network preys on isolated youth, often grooming them into participating in or documenting abuse. While some factions borrow symbols from neo-Nazi or Satanist extremism, experts stress this is largely performative.
“It’s about perceived alienation—hopelessness, lack of meaning, isolation,” said Marc-André Argentino, an extremism researcher with Public Safety Canada. “Trauma and perceived injustices are common threads.”
He noted that unlike ideological extremists, Com-affiliated groups lack political goals. Instead, violence serves as both an end and a means to gain notoriety.
“There’s no point if they can’t record it, livestream it, or post it online. The goal isn’t just the act—it’s spreading it for clout,” Argentino said.
Swedish cases tied to Com
Since 2024, Swedish courts have handled multiple Com-linked cases:
– A 19-year-old acquitted of child pornography charges (March 2024; tied to 764).
– A 16-year-old (“Chai”) sentenced for child exploitation and inciting suicide (April 2024).
– Two 14-year-olds detained for separate knife attacks (September 2024, January 2025).
– “Chai” rearrested in 2025 for three attempted murders; trial began May 2026.
– A 15-year-old held for arson in Ängelholm (February 2026; linked to a Com cell).
Authorities warn that the network’s influence continues to grow, with new cases emerging regularly.
