AI could save money if used wisely, says Faroese data agency director

A well-considered use of artificial intelligence could lead to cost savings, according to Nicolai Mohr Balle, director of Talgilda Føroya (the Faroese Data Authority), though he cautions that many questions remain about its implementation.

The comments came as a preliminary AI assessment was presented to stakeholders on Wednesday, including government representatives. Over 70 participants—delegates, experts, and analysts—have contributed to the work, divided into six groups with varying areas of expertise.

“AI can save money, but there are still many uncertainties about how it will unfold,” Balle told public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The next step will be developing a comprehensive plan outlining specific measures. The Faroese Data Authority has already proposed several potential actions related to AI deployment in the Faroe Islands.

Last year, the agency announced it had submitted an initial AI assessment to the Faroese government. This assessment marks the first phase, with a full strategy—addressing key AI issues for the islands—to follow.
