Snow surprises northern Finland with more expected midweek
Unexpected snowfall blanketed parts of northern Finland overnight, with more expected in some areas on Wednesday, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The heaviest snow fell in the Koillismaa region, particularly around Pudasjärvi, Taivalkoski, and Kuusamo, where several centimetres accumulated. Snow was also reported north of Oulu and in southern Lapland. While Oulu saw some snow, it was not among the hardest-hit areas, according to duty meteorologist Tuukka Keränen.
Though the Kainuu region largely avoided this round of snow, Keränen noted that its northern areas—and possibly the Oulu region—could see fresh snowfall late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. “If you’re out during that time, expect slippery conditions,” he advised.
No further snow is forecast for the rest of the week, but temperatures will remain cool, with overnight frosts likely. Keränen added that early May snow is not unusual in the region, though any accumulation typically melts quickly.
