Norwegian man dies in boating accident off Bali
A 34-year-old Norwegian man, Magnus Evysønn Breines, died in a boating accident off the coast of Bali last week, local media and Norway’s Foreign Ministry have confirmed.
According to reports, Breines was struck by a boat while fishing near Nusa Penida island on Saturday, April 25. He drowned in the collision, and rescue attempts were unsuccessful. Breines had been working as a teacher on the island.
His partner and brother spoke to Bergensavisen, which first reported the incident. “Words feel so inadequate. It’s unimaginably tragic,” his partner said. His brother added: “He knew what he was doing. At first, we wondered if he’d been careless, but we’ve been told it was an accident—there was nothing he could have done differently.”
Breines had worked since 2019 at Sclub, a fitness centre in Bergen’s Fyllingsdalen district, where he was described as a highly skilled professional and a source of motivation. In a Facebook tribute, the centre wrote: “Magnus—we are devastated. Your energy lit up every room. Your knowledge inspired us all. That an accident could take you from us is unbearable. Knowing you was a privilege we’ll carry forward. You can never be replaced, but we promise to keep working in your spirit—to hear your laughter, do as you taught us, and never forget you.”
The centre’s owners—Sissel Knudsen, Jan Johannessen, and Christian Marthinussen—told Dagbladet in an email: “Magnus was an exceptional professional and an extraordinary inspiration. His energy drove people to believe in their own abilities. He also inspired thousands of students in Bali pursuing careers in health. The thought of him no longer being here is heartbreaking. Our deepest sympathy goes to his loved ones—we cannot imagine their pain. We will never forget Magnus.”
Norway’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a Norwegian citizen in Bali but provided no further details by Monday.
