Food prices drop in Sweden with coffee seeing sharpest decline
Swedish food prices continued to fall in April, with ground coffee prices dropping by 8% in a single month, according to consumer price tracker Matpriskollen, as reported by public broadcaster SVT.
The overall cost of groceries decreased by 0.3% during the month, with fruit and berries seeing a 1.1% decline. Prices for rhubarb, strawberries, peaches, and avocados each fell by at least 5%. Meanwhile, beef prices continued to rise.
Compared to the same period last year, ground coffee is now 17% cheaper, with some brands offering discounts of up to 25%. The price tracker attributes part of the decline to a recent VAT reduction, noting that major supermarket chains have adjusted prices in line with the new rate.
Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen, stated that the changes provide “noticeable relief” for the average Swedish family, estimating monthly grocery savings of around 500 SEK (approximately 45 EUR).
