A 27-kilometre trail through Naturpark Amager has been designated the first route in Danmarks Naturstier (Denmark’s Nature Trails), a new network of well-marked hiking paths aimed at encouraging more people to explore the country’s landscapes, state broadcaster DR reports.

The Amarminoen trail, which winds through Amager Fælled, Kongelunden, and ends in Dragør, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday—coinciding with Denmark’s annual Store Vandredag (Great Hiking Day). A group of hikers gathered near DR Byen to walk sections of the route, marking the launch with traditional brunsviger pastries and communal singing.

Spearheaded by the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen), the initiative will eventually include routes in Naturpark Amager, as well as Sjælland, Lolland-Falster, Djursland, Mols Bjerge, and Viborg. The selected trails will feature clear signage, points of interest, and restroom facilities to improve accessibility.

Nikolaj Riis Josephsen, a specialist consultant at the Nature Agency, described the project as a “quality mark” for scenic, well-communicated routes designed to make nature more approachable. “The idea is to inspire people to get outdoors in an easy and engaging way,” he said.

Jes Aagaard, a nature guide in Naturpark Amager, emphasized the social and mental benefits of hiking. “Walking together creates presence and connection,” he said. “Many people discover a sense of calm when they’re out in nature—it’s a break from everyday life where you only focus on what’s right in front of you.”

The next phase of Danmarks Naturstier will expand to additional regions, with further routes expected to open in the coming months.
