A parliamentary majority supports reinstating the abolished Great Prayer Day public holiday, but its return remains uncertain despite election campaign promises, reports Danish broadcaster DR.

The debate over reviving the holiday—scrapped in 2023 as part of a reform to streamline public holidays—was a key issue in the recent election. Pia Olsen Dyhr, leader of the Socialist People’s Party (SF), campaigned on bringing it back, and a majority of lawmakers at Christiansborg now formally back the proposal.

However, it is still unclear whether Danes will see the holiday restored to their calendars.
