English continues to appear before Icelandic on directional signs at Keflavík Airport, despite repeated promises to change them, mbl.is reports. Eiríkur Rögnvaldsson, professor emeritus of modern Icelandic at the University of Iceland, criticised the signs in a post on the Málspjallið language discussion forum.

Isavia’s board announced on Icelandic Language Day, 16 November 2023, that Icelandic would come first on all directional signs at the airport by the end of 2024. The changes were not completed by that deadline, and the planned finish was postponed to spring 2026.

“The latest promise was that changes to the signs would be completed in spring 2026, but the accompanying photographs, taken last Monday, show that this is far from the case,” Rögnvaldsson wrote.
