Viking ship to be built in Drelnes instead of Hov
Plans to construct a Viking ship in Hov have been abandoned, with the project now moving to Drelnes near the cultural centre Salti, Kringvarp Føroya reports. The project, estimated to cost 30–40 million Danish kroner, will follow the design of Norway’s Gokstad ship.
The initiative, led by the association Víkingaskip, has been in development for over a decade. The group originally intended to build the vessel in Hov but shifted to Drelnes after facing challenges. The ship will be modelled after the 23.8-metre-long Gokstad ship, discovered in Norway in 1880.
In addition to the ship, the project includes a boathouse, workshop, and visitor facilities near Krambatang, where Smyril Line operates. Annika Hvanngarð, a board member of Víkingaskip, discussed the plans in a recent interview with Radio Salt.
