A district court in southwestern Finland will deliver its verdict on Tuesday in the retrial of Anneli Auer and Jens Ihle, who were previously convicted of aggravated sexual abuse but later had their sentences overturned by the Supreme Court. The case, which has raised questions about Finland’s legal system and the handling of child testimony, will be broadcast live by public broadcaster Yle.

Auer and Ihle were originally sentenced in 2013 to seven and a half years and 10 years in prison, respectively, for crimes allegedly committed against Auer’s four children. The eldest child has consistently denied any abuse took place, and the three other children later recanted their initial statements. The Supreme Court subsequently annulled the convictions—a rare move in Finland—and ordered a retrial in the district court.

The case has sparked debate over how children’s testimonies are evaluated in criminal proceedings and the broader functioning of the justice system. The verdict will be announced at 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT) and streamed on Yle TV1 and the Yle Areena platform.
