A 33-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, after her bicycle wheel became trapped in a structural gap on Helsinki’s newly opened Kruunuvuori bridge, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The cyclist, identified only as Elde, was descending the bridge toward Laajasalo on Wednesday afternoon when she encountered the unexpected depression in the cycle path. Despite wearing a helmet, she sustained head trauma, nerve damage to her right hand, and a hip injury, requiring an overnight hospital stay.

Helsinki city officials painted yellow warning stripes at the site following the accident, but Elde dismissed the measure as insufficient. “I find it ridiculous. That alone isn’t enough,” she told Yle. Authorities plan to install additional warning signs and tactile rumble strips in the coming days while investigating permanent repairs to the expansion joints.

Elde, an experienced daily cyclist, described the gap as a sudden hazard on an otherwise smooth path. “It was my first time riding over the bridge,” she said, noting her speed at impact was 16 km/h—a typical urban cycling pace. After emergency braking failed, she lost control and has no memory of the moments following the crash until awakening with a bystander’s assistance.

Though she credits her helmet with mitigating injuries, Elde warned others may not be as fortunate. “I was lucky, but an older person or a child might not be,” she said, urging cyclists to wear helmets. City officials confirmed they are exploring long-term solutions to address the safety risk, which has drawn criticism from local cyclists since the bridge’s recent opening.
