Storm damages iconic bridge lights in Jyväskylä, dangling wires pose safety risk

Several light fixtures on Jyväskylä’s landmark Kuokkala Bridge were damaged in a storm on Wednesday, with video footage showing wires swaying in the wind, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle. City officials warn that falling debris could endanger pedestrians and cyclists passing beneath the lights.

The half-kilometre-long bridge, which connects the city centre to the Kuokkala residential area, has around 50 light poles, each with four fixtures. The storm shattered multiple plastic lamp covers and dislodged internal mountings, leaving wiring exposed. Some components were seen hanging outside the damaged casings.

Jukka Piispanen, Jyväskylä’s head of street maintenance, emphasised the seriousness of the situation, noting that even small objects falling from the 10-metre-high poles could cause significant harm. While the exact cause of the damage is still under investigation, he suggested metal fatigue combined with the storm’s force may have contributed. At least one fixture’s base was found to be broken.

The bridge’s lights have faced recurring issues. Last year, Yle reported that many fixtures had been non-functional for months due to faulty bulbs and cable defects. The city renewed lighting on the harbour side of the bridge in 2025, with plans to upgrade the remaining fixtures this summer as part of broader renovation work.

Piispanen confirmed that the damaged lights on the Suuruspää side will be replaced when construction shifts traffic to the harbour side, tentatively in early June. The city has already addressed immediate hazards post-storm and will reinforce fixture mountings to prevent future incidents. If necessary, all bridge lights—including recently installed ones—will be inspected and upgraded.

Cost estimates for the repairs are not yet available. The ongoing renovation also includes building one-way cycle lanes on the bridge.
