Finnish government begins preparations for special economic zone in eastern Finland
The Finnish government has decided to launch preparations for a pilot special economic zone in eastern Finland, according to a statement released after Wednesday’s budget framework session.
In a press conference, Finance Minister Riikka Purra (Finns Party) said the situation and needs of eastern Finland were a key focus of the budget negotiations. The government will now prepare time-limited experimental legislation for the special economic zones as part of its eastern Finland programme.
The Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) proposed establishing the zone in spring 2024. A working group led by trade counsellor Harri Broman recommended a pilot project covering two areas: the Imatra region and Kajaani. Broman stated last week that the goal is to attract both domestic and foreign investment, with potential future expansion to other border municipalities.
The government also approved a major transport infrastructure investment package, a significant portion of which will be allocated to eastern Finland.
