Danish mechanics overwhelmed as drivers rush to switch to summer tyres
Mechanics across Denmark are facing an unusually high workload as drivers flood workshops to have their winter tyres replaced, reports DR Nyheder.
Kurt Larsen, owner of Kurts Auto in Aabybro, North Jutland, expects the rush to continue well into May. “It’s extraordinary how many people want summer tyres fitted,” he said. “We’ve also seen a lot of new customers we haven’t had before.”
His workshop schedule is fully booked, with appointments filling the calendar. Last year’s stricter regulations on tyre quality in slippery conditions led to increased demand, as many drivers needed new winter tyres. Now, with warmer weather approaching, Larsen emphasises the importance of switching to summer tyres.
“Once temperatures rise above seven degrees, summer tyres are necessary. Winter tyres wear down quickly in warmer conditions, affecting braking distance and road grip,” he explained.
According to SOS Dansk Autohjælp (Danish Roadside Assistance), many springtime breakdowns stem from worn tyres, low tyre pressure, weak batteries, and insufficient fluids. Experts recommend a spring check-up for vehicles, including switching to summer tyres.
April is one of the busiest months for workshops, Larsen noted. Beyond tyre changes, mechanics are handling a backlog of repairs and servicing newly purchased cars. Many vehicles bought in spring require mandatory inspections—after four years, then every two years—adding to the workload.
“Good weather means people are washing their cars and spotting issues that need fixing,” Larsen said. “On top of that, we’re dealing with regular repairs and servicing for cars sold this month.”
