Aino icebreaker, Finland, shipbuilding

Yle reports that Finland’s next-generation Aino icebreaker will be built in Helsinki and Pori. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency commissioned the project.

Helsinki Shipyard will be responsible for the shipyard delivery and assembly in Helsinki. Sata Shipbuilding in Mäntyluoto, Pori, will produce the steel structures and hull blocks.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year, and the icebreaker is due for completion in 2029.

Aino will be approximately 96 metres long and 24 metres wide when completed. The B-plus-class icebreaker will be capable of opening a channel about 25 metres wide through the ice.

Its performance will be based on a modern hull design, straight shaft lines and a steerable propeller located at the bow.

Helsinki Shipyard and Sata Shipbuilding are part of the Davie group, which specialises in shipbuilding.
