Faroese coalition secures majority in all parliamentary committees
The ruling coalition in the Faroe Islands will hold a majority in all of the parliament’s standing committees, following an agreement between government and opposition parties on seat allocations, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The coalition—comprising the People’s Party, Union Party, and Social Democratic Party—controls 22 of the 33 seats in the Faroese Parliament (Løgtingið), giving it a two-thirds majority. Under the agreement, the coalition will now occupy two-thirds of the seats in each of the six main committees: the Finance Committee, Labour Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee, Welfare Committee, Justice Committee, and Culture Committee.
“The coalition is entitled to two-thirds of all committee seats,” confirmed Johnhard Klettheyggj, Speaker of the Løgting, noting that the distribution reflects the coalition’s parliamentary strength. The opposition holds the remaining 11 seats.
An additional three members will be selected for the Government Affairs Committee, which oversees compliance with parliamentary decisions by the Prime Minister and cabinet. The committee appointments will be finalised when the Løgting reconvenes at 13:00 today.
The current government is led by Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen.
