Kringvarp Føroya reports that Vørn will not know the full extent of the engine failure on the Tjaldrið until Friday. There is concern that the vessel’s gearbox may also have been damaged, acting director Jóhan Simonsen said.
The Danish defence vessel Lauge Koch is currently stationed in Skálafjørður and is the only vessel presently carrying out surveillance and rescue services around the Faroe Islands.
Vørn has asked Arctic Command how long Lauge Koch is expected to remain in Faroese waters and whether it can perform the duties normally carried out by Brimil and Tjaldrið. Arctic Command has not yet responded.
Lauge Koch is one of three vessels in the Danish navy’s Knud Rasmussen class. The vessel was built in 2016, is 72 metres long and just over 14 metres wide, and has a helicopter landing deck.
