Kuopio actor Ilkka Pentti named theatre performer of the year for role as severely obese teacher
Ilkka Pentti, an actor at Kuopio City Theatre, has been awarded Finland’s 2025 Theatre Performer of the Year for his portrayal of Charlie, a severely obese and reclusive teacher in the play White Whale, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The award, voted on by members of the Actors’ Union, recognises a memorable and compelling performance. Pentti’s colleagues praised his ability to convey depth and presence while playing a character confined almost entirely to a sofa and wheelchair.
“Ilkka Pentti achieves a new kind of stage presence and an irresistibly moving depth in the role of the pathologically obese Charlie,” the union stated. “The nearly stationary performance reveals sharp thought and sensitivity in a compelling way.”
Pentti described the honour as both joyful and overwhelming, expressing respect for his fellow nominees. “I do feel I succeeded,” he said. The role required mastering extensive dialogue and collaborating closely with costume designers to create silicone prosthetics for Charlie’s appearance.
A veteran of Kuopio City Theatre for over 30 years, Pentti has performed in more than 100 productions, including notable works like Jessica – Born Free (2002) and Children of Hard Luck (2004). He remains open to diverse roles, emphasising the importance of strong ensemble work.
In White Whale, Pentti’s character attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter while grappling with isolation and physical limitations. The actor approached the role with realism, avoiding caricature in movement and demeanour.
