Migration of fieldfares and redwings significantly delayed, reports BirdLife Finland
The spring migration of fieldfares and redwings to Finland is clearly behind schedule, according to BirdLife Finland, with cold nights and persistent northeasterly winds in southern parts of the country hampering their progress.
These weather conditions particularly affect migrating passerines and waterfowl, the organisation noted. Observations collected via BirdLife’s Tiira bird reporting service show that fieldfare sightings over the past month were the second-lowest in 20 years, with only 2013 recording fewer detections.
Redwing numbers for March–April this year have also been among the lowest, surpassed only by the same period in 2012 and 2013.
