Swedish public broadcaster SVT is restructuring its morning news programme Morgonstudion, consolidating culture and sports reporting under its main news presenters, the company announced on Thursday.

From January 2027, the programme’s news anchors will also handle culture and sports updates, replacing the current format of dedicated short bulletins, according to Jane Andersson of SVT’s journalist union. The changes form part of broader cost-cutting measures at the broadcaster.

Anders Blåder, project manager for SVT’s culture news, confirmed that while hourly culture updates will be discontinued, in-depth studio discussions with culture journalists will be introduced instead. Evening culture broadcasts will continue, though with simplified technical production.

The restructuring aims to redirect resources toward SVT Play, online journalism, and social media platforms, Blåder said, emphasising the need to engage younger audiences with “modern media habits.” The adjustments follow previously announced savings plans at the broadcaster.
