Police in the Faroe Islands confiscated licence plates from 27 vehicles in the capital Tórshavn overnight, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports. The action follows 799 cases of outstanding road and environmental fees referred to authorities by the Faroese Road Administration (Akstovan).
The measure targets vehicle owners who failed to pay the mandatory fees for the first half of 2026. Police will remove plates if drivers cannot present proof of payment. Such large-scale enforcement is described as highly unusual.
Owners may recover their plates upon settling the debt and providing a receipt to police.
