A 19-year-old man has been remanded in custody for four weeks by Svendborg Court on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 41-year-old woman in Middelfart, reports Danish broadcaster DR. The suspect is also wanted in connection with a knife attack on the victim’s son two weeks prior.

The man denies the charges but was detained due to the risk of reoffending. Police confirmed that while there is no family relation between the suspect and the victim, they likely knew each other before the killing.

According to DR Fyn reporter Youssef Pries Ayoub, who attended the hearing, the judge cited a previous knife incident—where one of the woman’s two sons was stabbed—as part of the reasoning for remand. The suspect is also believed to have been outside the victim’s home on both Thursday and Friday before the attack.

Fyn Police’s special prosecutor, Daniel Dokkedahl, stated that investigators are examining a possible prior conflict or relationship between the two. “There is a backstory here that we need to uncover,” he said.

The case may also be linked to an arson incident at the victim’s residence a week earlier. Police are investigating whether the fire was deliberately set and if it connects to the stabbing.

The suspect, described as thin with a black beard and wearing grey jogging clothes and black sneakers, appeared composed in court. He did not oppose a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation during his detention. His lawyer, Birgitte Kirkegaard, confirmed that the remand decision would not be appealed.

A gag order on the suspect’s identity remains in place.
