Faroe Islands to examine VAT exemption for magazines

Finance Minister Aksel V. Johannesen will examine whether weekly and monthly magazines can be exempted from value-added tax, Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports.

The review follows a question from parliamentarian Astrid Breckmann, who asked why Faroese weekly and monthly magazines do not receive the same VAT exemption as newspapers.

Johannesen said the VAT exemption for newspapers was a historical and political special arrangement intended to support news distribution and democratic debate.

Weekly and monthly magazines are not currently considered to serve the same societal purpose, he said. The existing exemption applies to both printed and digital newspapers.
