A fire erupted at a sulphur storage facility in the port of Kotka on Friday afternoon, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports. Emergency services responded to the incident at M. Rauanheimo’s storage site in Mussalo port after an alert was raised shortly after 3 pm.

According to the Kymenlaakso Rescue Department, the fire likely resulted from a sulphur-related explosion. Authorities confirmed a sulphur leak at the site but stated the situation is currently under control, with no immediate danger to the public.

Eighteen rescue units were dispatched to the scene. M. Rauanheimo, a port operator with chemical storage operations in Mussalo, handles products including nickel and cobalt compounds as well as non-hazardous chemicals.
