Denmark’s largest railway hub, Copenhagen Central Station, will undergo a 420 million kroner modernisation starting today, state broadcaster DR reports. The project aims to create a more open, accessible, and passenger-friendly station by 2028.

The 105-year-old station currently serves over 100,000 daily passengers—a number expected to grow by 40 percent in the coming years. To accommodate the increase, operator DSB will restructure the arrival hall, reducing retail space and improving navigation, lighting, and security.

Four existing shop units will be cut to two, separating the hall into distinct travel and shopping zones. Elevators will be relocated, signage enhanced, and the station’s historic architectural features restored to their original appearance. DSB’s ticket and service desk will also move to a more visible location near the main entrance, replacing its current position by the Istedgade exit.

Construction will take place while the station remains operational. Passengers can expect temporary adjustments, including clearly marked detours and screened-off work areas, though food vendors like coffee and sandwich kiosks will stay open. DSB has pledged to maintain “clear signage, good lighting, and safe passage” throughout the project.

The modernisation aligns with broader efforts to prepare the station for rising demand while preserving its heritage, according to Lars Gøtke, deputy director of DSB Properties. “It’s about creating more intuitive facilities for travellers,” he told DR.
