Faroe Islands achieves seven days of 100 percent green electricity production
The Faroese national energy company SEV recorded seven consecutive days of fully renewable electricity generation across the entire country in early 2026, with the southern island of Suðuroy running on 100 percent green power for 30 days, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Strong wind and heavy rainfall in the first quarter of the year enabled SEV to meet demand entirely through hydro and wind power for 7.3 days nationwide. Suðuroy, the southernmost island, sustained 30 days of fully renewable electricity production—nearly 12 percent fewer than in the same period last year.
Demand for electricity continues to rise, with consumption up 6.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025. Despite the increase, favourable weather conditions allowed SEV to maintain extended periods of green energy output without relying on fossil fuel backup generation.
