The Patricia Seppälä Foundation has awarded its 2024 photojournalism prize to Markus Jokela, recognising his long career and influence on Finnish visual journalism, Yle reports.
Jokela, a former staff photographer at Helsingin Sanomat, was honoured for his “observations of the everyday and the ordinary,” according to the foundation’s statement. His work often incorporates unintentional humour, a style that has inspired many Finnish photographers.
The €12,000 prize also acknowledges Jokela’s role as a mentor and leader in the field, including his board membership in the Finnish Photojournalists’ Association and his involvement in key industry projects. He retired from Helsingin Sanomat in 2019.
This marks the 11th time the foundation has awarded its photojournalism prize.
