Hildur accuses finance minister of misrepresenting her position

Hildur Sverrisdóttir, an Independence Party MP and the party’s leader in Reykjavík, says Finance Minister Daði Már Kristófersson is misrepresenting her views on state deficits, mbl.is reports.

She said she had never suggested that the state’s long-running deficits would not eventually affect people.

Kristófersson became heated during a discussion at a meeting of the Association of Companies in Financial Services on Monday. In Morgunblaðið on Wednesday, he explained his reaction by saying he had objected to arguments that made it seem as though years of state deficits would not come back to hurt people.

“Where the hell else was it supposed to land?” Hildur said.

“The minister is clearly trying to justify his behaviour with invented insinuations. I find that rather poor, to be completely honest,” she told mbl.is.

In a Facebook post, Hildur said she had not made any argument suggesting that deficits would have no consequences.

“It may not be very smart to have to argue with a minister here, but I cannot let his words about having been offended by my arguments go unanswered. I said nothing of the sort that deficits would not have consequences somewhere, not one word. He is attributing a position to me and then scolding me for it. This is a tactic the governing majority has used many times, and it has become extremely tiresome,” she wrote.
