Finnish cat Altti awarded hero title for preventing kitchen fire
The Finnish Cat Association has named Altti a “hero cat” after the feline prevented a fire from breaking out in a holiday cabin.
According to owner Jaana Kilpi, the incident occurred when she had turned on the dishwasher at the cabin. Shortly afterward, occupants noticed an unusual smell. Altti, the family’s abyssinian cat, suddenly rushed to the dishwasher and began scratching frantically at its front panel.
“It started scratching the front of the dishwasher terribly,” Kilpi recalled. Recognising the behaviour as a warning, she investigated and discovered the appliance had begun to smoulder. When Kilpi’s partner opened the adjacent waste cabinet, Altti darted inside and clawed at the dishwasher’s power cord, revealing the source of the smoke.
“That was it—the dishwasher had caught fire,” Kilpi said.
Altti, who will celebrate his first birthday on 14 April, is described by his owner as exceptionally intelligent and energetic—a trait typical of his breed. The sociable cat often greets visitors and accompanies Kilpi around town in a carrier bag, frequently perching on her shoulder to observe his surroundings.
The Finnish Cat Association annually grants the hero cat title to felines demonstrating extraordinary care, resourcefulness, or bravery. This year’s recipients include Missu, a house cat who prevented water damage, and Rommy, a Siberian cat who saved her owner’s life.
Altti, who began his heroic work at a young age, is a breeding stud co-owned by breeder Jonna Varhama.
