Faroese kidney patients push for dialysis treatment in Klaksvík
Kidney patients in the Faroe Islands’ Norðoyggjar region currently face long trips to the capital Tórshavn for dialysis, but a new proposal could bring treatment closer to home, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Patients from the northern islands must spend entire workdays travelling to the national hospital in Tórshavn for dialysis sessions, according to Sigrið Mikkjalsdóttir, secretary of the Faroese Kidney Association (Nýrafelagnum). The group is now advocating for dialysis services to be introduced at Klaksvík Hospital, following the establishment of similar treatment on Suðuroy two years ago.
“It takes far too long for dialysis patients in Norðoyggjar to travel to Tórshavn for treatment,” Mikkjalsdóttir told Kringvarp Føroya. “This could change if the service were offered at Klaksvík Hospital.”
